The edges of it. Explanation in writing is all that gets made here, and the list of what does not exist is worth stating outright. No number has ever been published. Nobody sits and advises. Nothing gets reached into from elsewhere, no fault is traced, no login is put back, and no piece of hardware is repaired. Across the whole site there is not one field asking for a password, a card, or any detail belonging to you, and nowhere to log in even if there were.
Whoever holds the Alexa name holds it still, as with Echo and Echo Dot. They turn up on these pages because there is no other way to indicate which hardware is meant. Should a piece of your own equipment have actually failed, that is a matter for its maker or for the shop that sold it.

The mechanism behind the four steps, for anybody who would rather understand it than follow it blindly.
An Echo arrives knowing nothing. It has no keyboard, no screen on most models, and no way to be told anything except by radio. So the first exchange happens over Bluetooth — a close-range link that works without any network existing yet. Your handset finds the speaker sitting in front of it, and hands across two pieces of information: the name of your network, and its password.
That is the whole of Alexa setup, mechanically. Everything else on the screen is the application asking which account the speaker should belong to and which room it will sit in.
For a speaker with no display, there is no other route in. An Echo Show, having a screen of its own, can take the network details directly — which is why setup on those models happens on the device rather than on a handset. Every other model needs something with a keyboard to type into.
Once the speaker is on the network, the application stops being essential and becomes a control panel: adding a second unit, renaming rooms, adjusting what the microphone does. Removing it does not disconnect anything.
Your router does not compare the password loosely. It runs a calculation on whatever it is given and checks the result against what it expects. A single wrong character produces a completely different result, so the answer is always a flat refusal rather than a hint.
Capitals count. So do dashes, full stops and the digit zero against a capital O. An invisible space copied from the end of a line is a classic reason a password that looks right is rejected anyway.
Three causes account for nearly everything. The band, where a handset gets steered onto the faster network during setup and the speaker cannot follow. The password, mistyped by one character with nothing on screen to say which. And distance, where the speaker sits far enough from the router that it joins, then drops, then joins again.
None of the three produces a useful error message, which is why the same evening gets lost in the same way in a great many houses.
The speaker keeps its own copy of the network name and password, which is how it returns by itself after a power cut without anybody typing anything. That stored copy is also why the whole house goes quiet at once when broadband changes — every device is holding details that stopped being true at the same instant.
Where that has happened, nothing is broken and nothing needs setting up from scratch. Each device wants telling afresh, and the application has a setting for exactly that.

On an Android handset, yes, and it originates with the platform rather than with the application. Android files the business of listing what is broadcasting nearby under location, on the grounds that the collection of networks in earshot narrows a handset down to a few streets.
Anything meaning to show you that list therefore has to hold the permission first. Apple guards the same ground under a different name, which is why an iPhone never raises it at all.
For the first setup, yes — a phone or a tablet. The reason is the radio: an Echo is discovered over a close-quarters link that laptops and desktops do not carry.
Once it is running, a browser will let you adjust plenty of settings. Nothing gets it started except a handheld device.
Rarely, unfortunately. Networks in hotels, halls and holiday lets interpose a web page first, asking you to agree to terms before anything reaches the internet. Agreeing means clicking on a page, and an Echo has no browser to click in.
The device is fine; the network simply expects something it cannot do.
It does not, and never has — on either platform. Anything demanding money before it will set up a speaker, or wanting card details up front, is not the application Amazon publishes. Back out of it and search afresh.
Five minutes with the network name and password beside you. Considerably longer without them, because the delay is never the setup itself — it is leaving the screen to go and find something, which can cut the process short part-way through.
