Cut power at the switch and the bulb leaves the network entirely. It cannot be reached, cannot be dimmed, and cannot be told anything until somebody flicks the switch back.
Either leave the wall switch permanently on, or fit a smart switch instead of a smart bulb. Deciding which before buying saves the most common frustration in this whole category.

The part the packaging never explains, and the part that determines whether you keep using it.
A scene is a saved arrangement — these four lights, at these brightnesses, in these colours, all at once. Reading might be the ceiling light at full and everything else off. Evening might be lamps at a third, warm, with the ceiling dark.
Households that build three or four scenes keep using smart lighting for years. Households that only ever switch individual bulbs on and off abandon it by spring, because at that point it is a more awkward light switch.
Almost never where they can be seen directly. A strip is for bounced light: behind a television, under a kitchen unit, along the top of a bookcase, beneath a bed frame. The strip stays hidden and the wall or ceiling does the glowing.
Point one at a room and it is unpleasant. Hide it and the same strip transforms the space, which is why the mounting decision matters more than the specification.
Full-colour bulbs are bought for the colour and then used, overwhelmingly, on warm white. The colour comes out for a birthday, at Christmas, and when somebody new visits.
That is not an argument against buying them — it is an argument for putting the money into tuneable white in the rooms used daily, and colour only where a room is meant to perform.
A bulb speaking Wi-Fi reaches your router directly and needs nothing else. A bulb speaking Zigbee or Thread cannot reach the internet by itself and talks to a hub instead.
Hub systems generally respond faster, cope better with twenty or thirty bulbs, and do not crowd the Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi bulbs are simpler to start with and begin to struggle as the count rises. Our bands and protocols explainer covers why.

Mostly, but it depends where the intelligence sits. Bulbs on a local hub usually keep responding to switches, scenes and schedules because the hub decides everything on the spot.
Bulbs that route every instruction through a manufacturer's servers stop responding to voice and app control entirely, though a physical switch still works.
A small amount, because the radio has to stay awake to hear the instruction to switch on. It is a fraction of a watt per bulb — noticeable across thirty of them, negligible across five.
That standby draw is the price of being able to switch a light on without walking to it.
Bulbs and strips, almost always — they screw in or stick on and come away leaving nothing. That is the same permission an ordinary lamp needs.
Smart switches are a different matter entirely, because replacing one is electrical work behind a wall plate. That wants the landlord's agreement and a qualified electrician.
Wi-Fi bulbs start becoming unreliable somewhere past twenty or thirty, because each one occupies a slot on a router built for a handful of laptops.
Hub-based systems handle considerably more, often into the hundreds, because the bulbs never touch the Wi-Fi at all. Anybody planning a whole house is better served starting there.
